The Obama Disconnect

It seems that the Obama's have quite an expensive set of taste buds. Since taking office, there has been a whirlwind tour of celebrity chefs visiting the White House. While the rest of us are cutting back where we can, the Obama's feel no sign of the bad economy at their dinner table of high end meals cooked by top name chefs.

The Obamas took the trend to television in January when "Super Chef Battle" visited the White House. Comerford paired with Flay to win a battle over the team of chefs Emeril Lagasse and Mario Batali on the program.

While Comerford has been more visible, the position of White House chef has been largely unknown in the past, Scheib said.

"You just don't exist for all intents and purposes," Scheib said. "You are the most famous anonymous chef on Earth. Everybody talks about it, but nobody really knows about it."

With that changing, other chefs have been invited as well.

Last June, famed Hawaii chef Alan Wong prepared traditional luau foods like kalua pig and lomi lomi salmon for the annual picnic for members of Congress and their families. When the Obamas celebrated Hispanic music in October, they invited renowned Latin American chef Maricel Presilla to work with the White House kitchen staff.

WHite House Guest Celebrity Cooks

While all of this shows a bit of a disconnect in and of itself, Michelle's take on the issue shows just how far from the average American family the first family really is.

Carl Anthony, historian with the National First Ladies Library, said that while inviting guest chefs to the White House isn't unheard of, featuring such famous chefs is new. Anthony sees Michelle Obama using the chefs "to bring attention to the issue of nutrition, especially childhood nutrition."

In fact, Michelle Obama recently appeared on the Food Network special "Super Chef Battle," highlighting her White House garden and talking about it as a way to teach local children about healthy eating. Obama told the show's famous chefs, "We really want you all to be a part of helping us spread that message."

Yes, Michelle. The only reason kids are cramming down double cheeseburgers at McDonalds is because they were unaware that they could just invite a celebrity chef over to make zucchini onion quesadillas. It has nothing at all to do with the fact that a double cheeseburger is a dollar and renting a celebrity chef for a day is... well, I'll tell you when we get the tax bill.

Isn't it amazing how much the lifestyle of the Obama's has changed since they moved to Pennsylvania Avenue? It's even more stunning how they try to convince us it is for our good. If they want to eat a meal that costs a couple thousand dollars, it is of course not for them, but to teach poor fat kids how to eat. When Michelle wants a new couple thousand dollar dress, it's to give some exposure to a little known designer, not for her personal gain.
