Joe Klein; Too Dumb To Get It

This week Joe Klein over at Time Magazine wrote a piece called "Too Dumb To Thrive". The premise of the piece is that we, the American people, are too stupid to realize how good President Obama and his stimulus package have been for us. My favorite line of the article is as follows.

Indeed, the largest single item in the package--$288 billion--is tax relief for 95% of the American public. This money is that magical $60 to $80 per month you've been finding in your paycheck since last spring. Not a life changing amount, but helpful in paying the bills.

The problem isn't that Americans are too dumb to thrive. The problem is that Joe Kline is too dumb to get it. Let me try to break this down for Joe, or anyone else who is confused on the matter.

Joe Klein

Yes, President Obama signed a $787 billion stimulus package into law. But tell me, Joe. Have you ever stopped to think about where that money comes from? What product does the Government make? If you said cars, that would be correct, but the last time I checked Government Motors is losing $3.5 billion a quarter, so it didn't come from them. No, Mr. Klein, that money comes from the American people in the form of taxes.

Now, you make the point that "the largest single item in the package is tax relief for 95% of the American public". Yes, President Obama and our liberal Congress passed a $787 billion tax on the American people, and $288 billion of that goes to tax relief. This is the economic equivalent of getting a loan for $100,00 and using it to pay off the $35,000 you owe on your house, blowing the rest of it, and calling it a debt relief program.

He goes on...

The next highest amount was $275 billion in grants and loans to states. This is why your child's teacher wasn't laid off...and why the fire station has remained open, and why you're not paying even higher state and local taxes to close the local budget hole.

So the United States Government borrowed $787 billion and used it to loan $275 billion to the States. Yet aren't the people of the States the ones who pay the bills for both entities? I wonder what the interest rates are? How much interest are we paying the Federal Government for the loan we still owe interest to China on?

His summary...

It is very difficult to have a democracy without citizens. It is impossible to be a citizen if you don't make an effort to understand the most basic activities of your government. It is very difficult to thrive in an increasingly competitive world if you're a nation of dodos.

Well said. But fortunately, the latest polls show that we are not a nation of dodos. We have made an effort to understand the activities of our Government, and we do get it.  As for you, Joe? I just thought I should mention that we are not a Democracy, we are a Representative Republic. Before you decide to attack the people of your country for not understanding their Government, you should probably do a little research to find out what type of Government we actually are.
