The Political Pulpit

Have you ever noticed how Liberals can be a bit hypocritical? It happens so often that I couldn't possibly note each occurrence. Yet every now and again, the offense is so blatant and obvious that I feel compelled to point it out. That's why I felt the need to check out President Obama's speech to the Vermont Avenue Baptist Church in Washington D.C. on Sunday. Liberals were once again feeling that tingly feeling running up their leg as the man spoke, and perhaps that is why they missed a few parts of it. Here is one part that caught my attention.

President Obama at Vermont Avenue Baptist Church

I know it’s been a hard road that we’ve traveled to reach this point on health reform. I promise you I know. (Laughter.) But under the legislation I will sign into law, insurance companies won’t be able to drop you when you get sick, and more than 30 million people — (applause) — our fellow Americans will finally have insurance. More than 30 million men and women and children, mothers and fathers, won’t be worried about what might happen to them if they get sick. This will be a victory not for Democrats; this will be a victory for dignity and decency, for our common humanity. This will be a victory for the United States of America.

Fox News caught it, but to make my case "liberal proof", I will also site the New York Times who caught it as well. Neither of them directly pointed it out, but notice where they both posted the story. That's right, in the political sections of their websites. What is my point? Simply put, consider this case.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — The Internal Revenue Service has warned a prominent liberal church that it could lose its tax-exempt status because of an anti-war sermon a guest preacher gave on the eve of the 2004 presidential election, according to church officials.

The Rev. George F. Regas did not urge parishioners at All Saints Episcopal Church to support either President Bush or John Kerry, but he was critical of the Iraq war and Bush's tax cuts.

The IRS warned the church in June that its tax-exempt status was in jeopardy because such organizations are prohibited from intervening in political campaigns and elections.

What is different here? A couple of things. First, the statements were not made from by the preacher of the church. Second, the church is not in the jurisdiction of the upcoming election. That having been said, FoxNews, The New York Times, and YouTube for crying out loud are all in available in Massachusetts. A Presidential speech will be National News and will be re-broadcast all across the country. Hence, it is reasonable to conclude that the President knew he was speaking to a greater audience than those who were sitting in the pews. Ironically, the New York Times article on the speech reads much like the above clip on the complaint from the I.R.S. from U.S.A. Today.

Mr. Obama did not specifically mention the Massachusetts Senate race for the seat opened up by the death of Senator Edward M. Kennedy, but said that he fully intended to get his health reform package through Congress.

In Massachusetts, the Republican challenger for Mr. Kennedy’s seat, Scott Brown, has said that he would vote against the health plan if he is elected, and the Democrats right now are clinging to a razor-thin 60-40 majority in the Senate.

Mr. Obama is headed to Boston in the afternoon to campaign on behalf of the Democratic candidate, Attorney General Martha Coakley, before the special election on Tuesday.

I am obviously neither an attorney nor a judge.  I cannot emphatically state that this is in violation of tax law. I also know it is not a completely uncommon occurrence for a politician to speak from a church pulpit. But legal or not, I can positively identify hypocrisy when I see it. It is the left that constantly complains about people breaching the alleged separation of church and State. If a Bishop refuses communion to a Kennedy, we are told that the Church is trying to insert itself into politics. If a State allows a nativity scene in the yard of its capitol building, that is also somehow deemed to be a violation. Yet if President Obama wants to head off to a pulpit to pimp his latest political agenda, by all means feel free.
