Are We Puritans Now?
James Bopp Jr. of Indiana has proposed a "Purity Test" for any person who wishes to receive campaign funding from the Republican National Committee. The idea of this test would be to get Candidates to sign on to at least 8 of the 10 proposals, or receive no financial support. Here they are.
(1) Smaller government, smaller national debt, lower deficits and lower taxes by opposing bills like Obama’s “stimulus” bill
(2) Market-based health care reform and oppose Obama-style government run healthcare;
(3) Market-based energy reforms by opposing cap and trade legislation;
(4) Workers’ right to secret ballot by opposing card check
(5) Legal immigration and assimilation into American society by opposing amnesty for illegal immigrants;
(6) Victory in Iraq and Afghanistan by supporting military-recommended troop surges;
(7) Containment of Iran and North Korea, particularly effective action to eliminate their nuclear weapons threat
(8) Retention of the Defense of Marriage Act;
(9) Protecting the lives of vulnerable persons by opposing health care rationing and denial of health care and government funding of abortion; and
(10) The right to keep and bear arms by opposing government restrictions on gun ownership
So, how many did you get? I could sign on to 9 out of 10 myself. Does my dropping a point make me less Conservative? I was SO hoping for a perfect score. Let me explain my separation.
I fully expected to get 8 out of 10. I, you see, am pro choice. I was shocked at the wording of point #9. My pro choice stance is simply a Federal one. I think each State should have the right to decide if abortions should be allowed in that State. This way (in a perfect world) those who are pro life would not be forced to pay taxes to a Government they believe is sanctioning murder. I can fully, however, support the notion that no Government dollar should ever make it's way to an abortion clinic.
My dissension comes instead at point #8. I believe this also is up to the State. I would never sign a paper that required me to support the Federal usurpation of State power.And yes, I know that even liberal Sates are seeing gay marriage go down in flames when put to a vote. But that is how it should be. If the people of California had chosen to recognize gay marriage, I would support their right just as I do their chosen right not to.
Now, for the principal of the list. Is it wise for a party to pose a litmus test for those running for office? Let's be fair here. One doesn't have to be a hard core right winger to find eight out of those ten principals he can sign on to. But are we better off with a liberal Democrat than a moderate Republican? I can see this test leading us down that road.
At the moment of my writing this, I am unsure if I would support this or not. What say you?
